Malha or Manahat

Malha or Manahat is named after the biblical Canaanite town by the same name. Biblical Manahat was on the northern border of the Tribe of Judah (Joshua 15:59). Archaeological excavations in the area in 1987-1990 unearthed two ancient villages from the Biblical period. Before 1948, Malha was a Palestinian Arab village by the name al-Maliha. Today, Malha is a modern city under Jerusalem Municipality. The city has the famous Malha Shopping Mall, Teddy Stadium, and the Jerusalem Malha Railway Station.

This special burial area at Mount Herzl are for those officially designated as "the Greats of the Nation (Israel)." Here lies some of the most distinguished Israeli office holders, mainly state presidents and prime ministers. The biggest influx ever of visitors to the national cemetery happened when Israeli PM Yitzhak Rabin was buried here. Following pictures are taken from the grave sites of some of Israel's most famous and decorated leaders.

Ze'ev Jabotinsky (1880-1940): Right-Wing Zionist Leader; Founder of Jewish Legion of the British Army (WW I) and the Jewish Armed Organization Irgun

Chaim Herzog (1918-1997): Sixth President of Israel.

Zalman Shazar (1889-1974): Third President of Israel.

Yitzhak Rabin (1922-1955): 5th Prime Minister of Israel. 1994 Nobel Peace Prize Winner. Israel's only assassinated Prime Minister (1995).

Golda Meir (1898-1978): Fourth Prime Minister of Israel. Also Israel's First and World's Third Female PM.

Levi Eshkol (1895-1969): Third Prime Minister of Israel. He led Israel during its Six Day War victory in 1967.

Theodor Kollek (1911-2007): mayor of Jerusalem from 1963-1995. Elected 6 times consecutively. Called "the greatest builder of Jerusalem since Herod".

Joseph Sprinzak (1885-1959): Israel's First Speaker of the Parliament (Knesset)

Eliezer Kaplan ( 1891-1951): Israel's First Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.
