Archaeological discoveries from ancient Jaffa (Tell Jaffa)
Many interesting archaeological findings have been unearthed near the Gan Hapisga garden. Some of them are still preserved there and rest you can find in Jaffa museum. The most striking is however the Ramses Gateway, a marvelous gateway in front of a fort dating from Ramses II, the Egyptian Pharaoh under whose reign the exodus of Israelites happened. During this period (13th century BC) Jaffa was a stronghold under Egyptian authorities. This gateway was discovered by the archaeologist Y Kaplan during 1955-1962. The inscription on the stones in Egyptian hieroglyphics language mentions the royal names and titles of Ramses II (1224-1290 BC). Beneath this gateway you can see the remains of brick walls from 16th to 14 th century BC.
