Akeldama/Field of Blood

Akeldama or The field of blood’ is the field where Judas Iscariot, hanged himself after betraying Jesus Christ for 30 pieces of silver (Acts 1:15-19). The earth in this area was rich with red clay and was once used by potters, thus it was also known as the Potter's Field. In another version, Judas hanged himself after returning the money to the Temple authorities, who then used the money to buy the Potter's Field, which was then used as a burial place for foreigners (Matthew 27:7). Till date, the field is filled with ancient burial caves and has a small Greek Orthodox Monastery at the site.
