The Tombs of Prophets (Haggai , Malachi, Zechariah)
The Tombs of the Prophets is a complex catacomb (underground burial caves) of around 50 chambers on the Mount of Olives. A medieval Jewish tradition identifies them as the tombs of the prophets Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi (prophets of the last three books of Old Testament), who lived in the 6th-5th centuries BC. However, it is now generally accepted as a tomb complex from 1st century BC only. I met a Russian Orthodox priest who happened to be the caretaker of the tombs. He explained me that there are actually three layers of tombs here. The oldest are from 5-6 cent BC (period when these prophets lived), followed by those from 1st cent AD and 4-5 cent AD. The cave complex from 1st cent AD are lighted with a portrait of Jesus. After climbing down the steps you reach a very dark chamber and it was impossible to walk without light. Thanks for the flaslight hanging at the entrance. The speculated Tombs of Prophets are actually above ground and the entrance to these caves are lighted by a small lamp.
