Mary's Spring (3000 yrs old), Ein Kerem

The village of Ein Kerem evolved around this ancient spring. The spring gave its name to the village (Hebrew: Ein=spring and Kerem=vineyard). According to Christian tradition, virgin Mary stopped here to drink from the waters, hence the name Mary's spring. The spring was used by Canaanites before Israelites entered the Promised Land (3000 years ago!). A 30 metre rock hewn tunnel was constructed during the Second Temple period (6th Cent BC to 1st Cent AD) in order to increase the spring's capacity. Today, one can see a 19th cent built mosque above the spring.
